Ways To Reduce Medi-Spa Premiums

How Can I lower my Medi-Spa Premium?

Here are a few ways to keep your premiums as low as possible:

Medical Director Coverage – If your medical directors treat patients themselves, this results in additional costs, usually $2500 – $5000 per physician.  Having your medical director oversee protocol, procedures and patient safety only, instead of performing the procedures, will save money.  You can staff RN’s, NP’s, PA’s and aestheticians to administer treatments, and there is no additional premium to add them.  For support on starting your medi-spa or current guidelines and information, please visit the International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine at www.iapam.com

Procedures – The medi-spa package covers the non surgical aesthetic basics: Laser hair removal, Laser skin treatments, botox, fillers, Sclerotherapy, chemical peels, massage, and the tattooing of so-called Permanent Makeup.  Any liposuction or surgical cosmetic procedures will increase the annual premium significantly.  You can get additional info on the cost of your lasers at www.ALMAlasers.com

Lipo-dissolve is experimental; it is not approved by the FDA.  In the last year, the insurance carriers supporting our medi-spa programs have begun to specifically exclude Lipo-dissolve and related procedures from their policies.   In such cases, the carriers will have a specific exclusion on their polices against injectables which are:

  • Contaminated
  • Mislabeled
  • Fraudulent  and/or  imitation “injectable(s)
  • Not  approved  by the  FDA (experimental)

(They  may also  specifically name Lipodissolve, LipoDissolve, Lipostabil, Lipolysis, LipoShape, Flab-Jab, Lipojection, Lipotherapy or any PC (Phosphatidylcholine)  or  DC (Deoxycholate)- related  injectable  product.)

Lipo-dissolve involves as series of treatments, during which the healthcare provider injects a solution into those specific areas where offensive fat is located.  The solution is intended to melt away small, localized pockets of fat.  While the ingredients used in lipo-dissolve may vary depending on the doctor and the area being treated, the chemical cocktail typically includes phosphatidylcholine/deoxycholate (PCDC), multivitamins, alpha lipid acid, enzymes and plant extracts. Phosphatidylcholine is a soybean extract, and deoxycholate is a bile derivative. Phosphatidylcholine is FDA-approved to break down blood fats that may increase risk for heart disease, but it is not approved for any other purpose. Many of the individual ingredients are not FDA-approved on their own, nor collectively, as part of a chemical cocktail.

In some cases, the administering of lipo-dissolve treatments  can be added to one’s policy (for an additional fee,) depending on the qualifications of the healthcare professional administering the injections.  If lipo-dissolve treatments are specifically excluded from your policy, but your practice is approved by the carrier to administer such treatments, the the additional cost of adding this procedure  usually starts at $5000.  You will want to factor this cost into your decision to offer the procedure, as well as the fee charged for it.
